Homemade Blueberry Syrup Recipe (Easy Simple Syrup) (1)

When I say this recipe is easy, it’s no joke. Perfect for beginners, Blueberry Syrup comes together in less than 10 minutes and is a fun way to add extra flavor to your favorite beverages and recipes.

Simple syrup is one of those recipes you need up your sleeve. It is great to have on hand to make co*cktails, sweeten iced tea, or cold brew coffee without worrying about your granulated sugar not dissolving.

But, regular simple syrup is just plain, with no pizzazz, which is great if you need a neutral-flavored sweetener, but sometimes I like to make some extra special.

My favorite way to do that is to make it into a fruity flavor. One of my favorites is to make my own blueberry syrup.

Not only can you use it in co*cktail recipes and cold drinks. But, it also works on food items as well.

Use it in the same way you would use maple syrup or pancake syrup. It adds a burst of flavor and a fruity twist to switch up your favorite dishes.

Blueberry Syrup is so versatile; scroll down for the recipe and tips and tricks on the best way to make and use it.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS RECIPE:

WHAT IS SIMPLE SYRUP?

Simple syrup is just a mixture of granulated sugar and water. The ratio can vary from recipe to recipe.

Making homemade simple syrup is easy – all you do is place sugar in a small saucepot with water, and bring it to a simmer to make sure the sugar is dissolved. Then let it cool; that’s it!

Every bar has plain simple syrup on hand, but to make it extra special, you can add more ingredients for flavored simple syrup – like blueberries!

It doesn’t stop with drinks though, blueberry simple syrup is a great topping for French toast, pancakes, milkshakes or ice cream!

CAN I USE ANOTHER BERRY?

Absolutely, this method will work with other berries, my favorites are:

  • Wild blueberries – you can normally find these frozen at the grocery store
  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries
  • Blackberries
  • Cherries
  • Cranberries

HOW LONG DOES BLUEBERRY SIMPLE SYRUP LAST?

When stored in the fridge in an airtight container or jar, it will last for up to 3 weeks.

This makes for a great make-ahead dessert or breakfast topping.

Homemade blueberry syrup can also be frozen for up to 3 months.

Sometimes I will make a large batch and then freeze it into ice cubes, pop them out, and store them in a freezer-safe ziplock bag so I can enjoy it anytime.

WHAT TO SERVE THIS WITH?

There are SO MANY ways you can serve this homemade syrup. Here are my favorites:

  • Breakfast Foods: Pancakes, waffles, and French toast
  • Oatmeal
  • Yogurt
  • Ice cream
  • Cereal
  • Salads
  • Grilled chicken or fish
  • Yogurt parfaits
  • Smoothies
  • Favorite Drinks – amazing in tea or lemonade in place of another sweetener
  • co*cktails Recipes – or mocktail recipes (like in our Blueberry Vodka Lemonade)
  • Desserts – use as a soak between cake layers as well.

This recipe is a great way to add a touch of sweetness and fruitiness to any dish. The sweet blueberry flavor is a fun alternative to other syrups, such as maple syrup.

CAN I USE FROZEN BLUEBERRIES?

Yes, use them in equal parts to fresh. No need to defrost them!

Just be advised it may add to the cooking time since the sugar and water mixture will have to come back up to a simmer.
