Tech, Northern Iowa to meet on Thanksgiving - Texas Tech Red Raiders (2024)

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas –Texas Tech and Northern Iowa will start the Thanksgiving Day slate of games at the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis with tip-off set for 11 a.m. (CST) on Thursday at Imperial Arena. The Red Raiders (3-1) are coming off their first loss of the season after dropping an 85-69 decision to Villanova on Wednesday, while the Panthers (1-3) took a 91-69 loss to North Carolina in the tournament's first game. The Tech-UNI matchup is the first in history between the two programs.

"You've always got to rely on your training," Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland said of the quick turnaround between games. "It's what you've done in October and back in the summer. It's preparation for these moments. I know this team has practiced really hard. You have to go out there and give great effort. It doesn't matter the scheme. You have to have great effort. It's how you improve in these quick turnarounds. We have to improve in every opportunity we have. This team can do that. We aren't close to where we'll be at the end. Now we have to put it into play against at great UNI team tomorrow."

Despite the loss, Tech is coming off a season-high 17 assists and 14 made 3-pointers against Villanova in the opening round of the Battle 4 Atlantis. Pop Isaacs led the team in scoring with 16 points after making four of the 14 3-pointers, while Joe Toussaint had a season-best 15 points and eight assists. Devan Cambridge added 11 points to give the Red Raiders three double-figure scorers and Warren Washington provided a season-high four blocked shots and eight rebounds. Tech's 14 3-pointers matched their performance against No. 15 Texas A&M in the team's exhibition win, but the team had made just 13 3-pointers through the first three games. Along with Isaacs, Chance McMillian and Toussaint had three 3-pointers each. While 3s were falling (38.9 percent), the Red Raiders were outscored 26-14 in the paint and saw Villanova make 26 free throws while they only went to the free-throw line 22 times - making 13.

Defensively, Tech had been dominant and was third nationally by limiting teams to only 50.7 points per game coming into the Battle 4 Atlantis. That average rose to 59.3 with Villanova's scoring output.

"I thought they were the more physical and tougher team," said McCasland of the Villanova game. "They beat us in paint points and got more offensive rebounds. They made more free throws than we attempted. Those are three huge factors. I thought in the course of the game if we could get stops in transition it would give us opportunities, and it did. We closed the gap in the second half but they went right back to us in the paint and made a couple 3s when we tried to take the paint away.
